Perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan di Andalus pada zaman pemerintahan Banu Umayyah / Azam Hamzah

Call Number:DP302.A469A92 1994
Abstract:Al-Andalus was ruled by the Umayyad dynasty for nearly three hundred years from 756 to 1031 A.D. During that long period, al-Andalus had been transformed from a very poor and unstable country to a most advanced nation in Europe in various fields. One of these fields is related to sciences and technology. The purpose of this study is to examine the development of knowledge in al-Andalus and to investigate the most important factors which brought about this development. Among the issues examined are the role of Umayyad rulers in al-Andalus in the intellectual dan cultural spheres: the attitude of the population towards knowledge and sciences: educational institutions in al-Andalus under the Umayyads; branches of sciences given special attention by the Andalusian scholars: and the relation between the development of sciences and economic development in al-Andalus. This study has revealed that the factors which brought about the development of sciences in al-Andalus were inter-related between the impetus of Islamic teachings, the role and liberal attitude of the Umayyad rulers toward intellectual activities which not only enable the knowledge in various fields to flourish but also had attracted eminent eastern scholars, particularly from Baghdad, to immigrate to Cordova. And last but not least is the positive attitude of the masses towards literary activities which enabled them to be a knowledgeable society. The results of the study have also revealed that there is a correlation between the development of sciences and the development of trade and commerce which helped al-Andalus to be the most civilised and prosperous nation in Europe.
